WE BELONG at the Roxie Theater

SEE EVENT DETAILS
This eclectic film program features nine international short dance films that revel in the joy, eccentricity, and variety of human connection. Co-produced by McEvoy Foundation for the Arts and Tiny Dance Film Festival, this afternoon at the Roxie Theater includes a live performance and Q&A with choreographers and filmmakers. Tickets range from $9 to $10.

Organized with a sensitivity to accessibility and inclusivity, the cross-genre lineup of 'We Belong' features Bharatanatyam, hip hop, and contemporary dance. Subjects range from Black trans femme love to the Chinese diaspora to the irreverence of office furniture-each offering a refreshing alternative to dominant narratives. Dancer Terrence Paschal opens the program with a solo dance that embodies the 'Kitsune' (fox) from Japanese mythology and its symbolism of the conscious and unconscious in human expression. Following the screening, Eric Garcia moderates a filmmaker Q&A with Jody Stillwater ('The Wind Telephone') and Jenny Stulberg ('Hold Still').

'We Belong' is curated by Kat Gorospe Cole and Eric Garcia, founders of the Tiny Dance Film Festival (TDFF), a San Francisco-based festival that embraces brevity, embodies the concept of dance with the camera, and amplifies marginalized voices.

'We Belong' is one of several live events organized by McEvoy Arts that amplify the themes of its current exhibit 'Next to You.' Featuring artworks from the McEvoy Family Collection, 'Next to You' celebrates the joy, vitality, and healing power of the performing arts. Also on view is 'Hearing Aids,' a daily screening program of short films guest curated by visual artist and filmmaker Alison O'Daniel, that explores expansive understandings of sound and listening. Admission to McEvoy Arts is free.

$9-10.
