Vintage Queer San Francisco

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Oddball Films presents Vintage Queer San Francisco, a program of ultra-rare documentaries and short films from the 1960s and 1970s. Get pride weekend started off right with this groovy and glamorous smattering of local queer nostalgia and whimsy. Naughty and thought-provoking, the investigative documentary Gay San Francisco (1969) gets down and dirty with the queer scene of the late 60's. Sinderella (1962), produced by local "Lorelei" is a fabulously kitschy, campy, draggy version of the classic fairy tale. See how San Francisco made itself up in the disco era with Flame! San Francisco Drag Queens (1976). The Groping Hand (1968) is a little-slice of homo-erotica shot in the nudie bars of North Beach. Plus! Drag legend Charles Pierce sings “San Francisco” from The Charles Pierce Review (1969), rare clips of Harvey Milk, drag queens in the Black Sabbath Parade, and behold the pageantry of The Halloween Show at the Levee (1969) for the early birds! So take pride in our city by the bay and see how we turned it out back in the day!

Date: Thursday, June 27th, 2013 at 8:00PM
Venue: Oddball Films, 275 Capp Street, San Francisco
Admission: $10.00 Limited Seating RSVP to: 415-558-8117 or [email protected]

Featuring:

Gay San Francisco (B+W, 1969)
Complete with full nudity and odd interviews, this film is a racy and stylized view of queer SF in the late 60’s. Narrated like a David Attenborough documentary, the filmmakers seem to identify themselves as separate species while allowing the subjects to be completely open and honest about their experiences. The film features interviews with homosexuals and transgendered individuals relaying their life stories, as well as glimpses into the wild-party atmosphere and sexual novelties of San Francisco's groovy golden age.

Flame! San Francisco Drag Queens (Color, 1976)
Watch these drag queens gussy them selves up in preparation for San Francisco’s Gay Pride Parade. Amazing one of a kind parade shots are riveting in their exuberance and over the-top sensibilities.

Sinderella (B+W & Color, 1962)
This amateur film produced by "Lorelei" is a faithful reenactment of the Brother's Grimm Cinderella... except with a handful of lovely drag queens playing all the parts. A rare document of the San Francisco drag scene in the early 60s, this gem is like a long-lost step sister to Jack Smith's Flaming Creatures. Don't miss the amazingly cheezy production values, awesome wigs, and high-handed bitch slapping that blows Di$ney right out of the water. Poor Sinderella's hair gets a fabulous makeover when she's transformed! In B+W and color.

The Groping Hand (Color, 1968)

This bizarre slice of homo erotica was shot in San Francisco’s North Beach in the heyday of free love. A hunky male gets all revved up gazing at the live sex show signs and clubs on Broadway when he’s beckoned in by a female hand. Once inside he cuts loose, “stripping” his time away to down and dirty soul music.

Plus! Drag legend Charles Pierce sings “San Francisco” from The Charles Pierce Review (1969), rare clips of Harvey Milk, drag queens in the Black Sabbath Parade, and behold the pageantry of The Halloween Show at the Levee (1969) for the early birds!
