Venga Paella in Oakland will host a HowAboutWe "add a pinch of saffron to our lives with an exclusive paella making class" on Sunday, February 9 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Lead by Catalonia-born Chef Eduardo Balaguer (he has the rice stuff), the $150.00 (for two people) event will include instruction, a tapas tasting, a paella dinner and a pitcher of sangria, and the price includes tax and gratuity. The reservation process begins with a visit to

The tapas menu will be tortilla de patatas y cebolla (potato, egg and onion Spanish style frittata with a drizzle of aioli), Pan con tomate (toasted bread with a tomato and light garlic and olive oil rub), stuffed piquillo peppers (goat cheese, caramelized onions and green olives), and gambas al ajillo (prawns sautéed in a garlic and sherry reduction).
Chef Balaguer, 47 years old, has, for the last decade, been the proprietor of a catering company. The popularity of his dishes and the growing interest in Spanish cuisine has enabled him to now add a brick and mortar component to his business. Balaguer left a well established career in the world of finance to pursue his personal passion for the culinary arts. In 2003 he spent a summer working at Casa Balaguer, his family’s traditional paella restaurant in Valencia, Spain, and subsequently traveled throughout the country to experience its regional foods and wines. In 2007 he completed the Culinary Institute of America’s Certified Wine Professional Foundation Level course. On a regular basis, Venga Paella serves a menu of paella and Spanish tapas prepared with seasonal, often organic and locally sourced ingredients, and the beverage menu includes a selection of craft beers and a small international wine list along with cavas and sangria.
The restaurant's casual and inviting 49-seat dining room includes a reclaimed redwood bar and other rustic accents, plus Spanish Revolution themed posters and a Chef's table. Sidewalk seating for 8 people will be available, weather permitting. A lounge area affords access to custom-made Jenga sets that enable guests to play this popular stick stacking game.
Venga Paella is located at 229 Brush Street, at the corner of Third Street, in Oakland, California.
