While Valentine’s Day generally conjures up images of happy couples and romantic proposals, for some the holiday represents something else entirely. The expectation of being in love or partnered intensifies suicidal thoughts for those who find themselves depressed and alone. Valentine's Day marks the beginning of an increased suicide rate at the Golden Gate Bridge, the top suicide destination in the world.
The Bridgewatch Angels are seeking compassionate volunteers to engage in suicide prevention. Our primary focus will be to greet individuals on the bridge who are walking alone, displaying negative body posture, or lingering mid-span. The impact of a smile and simple hello is more powerful than you think!
At 2pm, Mia Munayer and the Bridgewatch Angels trainers will greet you in front of the Bridge Cafe (San Francisco Welcome Center). A mandatory orientation will begin promptly at 2pm so we ask you to arrive 30 minutes early to park and use the facilities/purchase snacks. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
After signing up on Eventbrite, please visit the Bridgewatch Angels Facebook Page and select "going" on our Valentine's Day Bridgewatch event. This is important so you can receive instructions, updates and helpful tips to plan your day with us. We are also a community and love to help each other before the big day (i.e. carpooling).
We would be very appreciative if you would share our Valentine's Day event on your Facebook Page and tell your family and friends. If you don't have facebook, you will receive important updates from Bridgewatch Angels via Eventbrite.
