Umi: Ode to Minamata and Confluence

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Mar 23, 7:30pm to 10:00pm and Mar 24, 2:00pm to 4:30pm

OnenessButoh and Rain Ensemble present the world premiere of UMI ("The Sea"). UMI is comprised of two performances: 1) Ode to Minamata and 2) Confluence.

For its 6th Season, OnenessButoh performs the world premiere of Ode to Minamata. Ode to Minamata is a Butoh dance production performed in collaboration with Rain Ensemble, a Taiko drumming group. Paying homage to the resilient spirit of the Japanese residents of a small seaside fishing village in Minamata, Japan, Ode to Minamata shines a spotlight on a catastrophic environmental disaster.

Since 1907, Chisso Corporation--a manufacturer or plastics--employed 60% of the Minamata residents, bringing them prosperity and a higher standard of living. However, for 37 years, Chisso carelessly dumped an estimated 27 tons of methylmercury into Minamata Bay thus contaminating the fish, the main food source of the residents. In the early 1950s, residents began exhibiting strange, uncontrollable neurological symptoms. Known as "Minamata Disease", an estimated 2 million people suffered debilitating health problems which led to permanent disability and eventually a slow and painful death. It took many years before the cause of the disease was determined. Sadly, Chisso denied responsibility for the contamination until 1973, when it was officially identified as the source.

Choreographed by Judith Kajiwara, the story of Minamata is told in eight dances performed by the nine members of OnenessButoh. Providing live music for the story are Naoko Amemiya and Kallan Nishimoto of Rain Ensemble.

Following Ode to Minamata, Rain Ensemble premieres Confluence, a music concert featuring Taiko (Japanese drums), winds, percussion, gongs and bells. Rain Ensemble was created in 2015 by musician/composer Kallan Nishimoto. Rain embodies the element of water which inspires its music and movement. The concert will feature the powerful and ephemeral aspects of Taiko drumming, theatrical staging and dance.
