Uganda: Gorillas, Chimps, and (surprise) Jews!

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Jews in Uganda? Absolutely. The Abayudaya community was formed 100 years ago and, today, there are thousands of Jewish Ugandans living in nine rural villages in the eastern part of the country. Like any other Jewish community, there are houses of worship, schools and even a medical clinic. The story of how this group came to be and how they survived the era of Idi Amin and the subsequent famine is remarkable.

The Osher Marin JCC's Director of Jewish Engagement, Joanne Greene, and her photographer/video producer husband Fred Greene, visited Uganda in February of 2019, on safari in five national parks before heading east to the small village of Nagayugoya to spend Shabbat with the Abayudaya (people of Judah).

Hear their stories and view their photos and the short documentary films they have since produced at a special program in the JCC's Kurland Lounge. You will learn all about this unique community of Jewish subsistence farmers fully committed to the Jewish future. Joanne and Fred will be joined by a young woman who grew up in the village, Abigail Binah, the niece of Rabbi Gershom Sizomu who not only leads the Abayudaya community but currently serves in the Uganda parliament.
