The UCSF University Day Science Expo showcases 6 hands-on stations and tours of technology being used to decode the fundamental principles of life, leading to tomorrow’s advances in health. In the company of leading UCSF researchers, visitors can:
• Immerse themselves in microscopic worlds using virtual reality and see how scientists plan to use VR to train the researchers of the future;
• Learn how scientists are reprogramming immune cells into cancer killers and watch “nanobots” that self-assemble into networks, simulating and illuminating the behavior of biological networks;
• Witness cell regeneration in action in the remarkable single-celled organism “Stentor,” a creature that can learn without a brain or nervous system;
• Experience holographic surgical planning, in which images of human organs, generated from actual medical imaging, appear to float in space, allowing observers to peel away virtual layers to reveal what’s underneath;
• Play video games designed to treat dyslexia in kids; and
• Explore teaching materials used by UCSF’s Science and Health Education Partnership, an alliance between UCSF and the San Francisco Unified School District, which has brought rich, interactive science activities to the children in San Francisco’s public schools for 30 years
All the demos will be in the atrium of the Mission Bay Conference Center. Exhibits open from 2:30-4:30 PM.
