Friday & Saturday, Sep 13 & 14 at 8pm; Sunday, Sep 15 at 3pm
The Margaret Jenkins Dance Company (MJDC) and the Dresher/Davel Invented Instrument Duo are collaborating on a new immersive work entitled "Trace Figures". The premiere will be held at DZINE's expansive showroom in San Francisco from September 13-15, 2019, inhabiting a number of the various bays of this luxurious 15,000 sq ft. space. Audiences will be led by the dancers and musicians from one area to another, experiencing the performance and the DZINE space from a variety of vantage points.
In its four-and-a-half decades of dancing around the world and throughout the Bay Area, Margaret Jenkins and the MJDC have performed in many unconventional spaces. This new work at DZINE will be the first designed especially for such a distinctive site, offering a special opportunity to interact with Paul Dresher's score in a unique way.
Dresher has long been interested in bridging the boundary between the musicians and dancers in performance, and for this collaboration they will be interacting with his and Daniel Schmidt's invented musical instruments and sound sculptures. The movements required to play (or trigger) these remarkable instruments are, in fact, more akin to dance movements than the small motor dexterity required for traditional instruments. Thus, the MJDC dancers will move within and "perform" on some of these inventions, generating a performance that is at the same time both physical and sonic.
Jenkins, Dresher, and the dancers are all extremely excited by this collaboration and the opportunities and provocations presented by placing dance and live music in DZINE.
Please note that there will be very limited seating for these performances, and advanced ticket purchase is advised.
$15-$25.
Presented by Margaret Jenkins Dance Company.
