Toxic Stress in Times of National Turmoil: Does Zen Buddhism Have the Answer?

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Addressing the health and psychological issues of a toxic stress from the country’s chaotic current events, Crimson Gate Meditation Center is offering a series of sessions for Creating Sanctuary: Sustaining Inner Peace in Times of Turmoil.

Facilitated by a psychologist, Sheila Longerbeam, in the Zen Buddhist tradition, the series explores methods of alleviating anger, anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. Offered in 2018 on four Tuesday evenings from October 30 through November 27, from 7:30pm-9pm at 3824 Grand Avenue, Oakland, the cost is on a sliding scale of $50-$200 for the series. Series Dates: October 30, November 6, 13, 27. Registration: http://www.crimsongatemeditation.org/creating-sanctuary.html

The American Psychological Association released a report citing the political climate “As a significant source of stress for 57% of Americans. The percentage of people reporting at least one health symptom because of stress rose from 71% to 80% over five months. A third of Americans have reported specific symptoms such as headaches (34%), feeling overwhelmed (33%), feeling nervous or anxious (33%) or feeling depressed or sad (32%).” 1

This 4-week class teaches meditation practices to respond skillfully to the social and political demands of our times from a place of equanimity, compassion and to balance personal needs for rest and refuge with the ability to take action in our communities.
