Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) will celebrate the First Anniversary of TNDC’s Kelly Cullen Community at its 33rd Annual Birthday Dinner on Thursday, May 8 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. The festive evening will feature cocktails, dinner, a heartwarming program emceed by ABC7 anchor Cheryl Jennings, dancing and live entertainment by gypsy-jazz and uptown swing band George Cole, and after-dinner dance music by DJ King Most. The uplifting evening, along with co-chaired by Radha Stern and Gary Maxworthy, will include the annual presentation of The Brother Kelly Cullen Community Service Award named for the late former TNDC Executive Director, and given to an individual or organization that shows extraordinary community spirit and compassion in providing services to San Francisco’s poorest and neediest residents. This year’s award will go to Darryl Smith and Laurie Lazer, co-founders/directors of The Luggage Store/509 Cultural Center, for their leadership in the San Francisco neighborhood art scene for nearly three decades.
Hundreds of supporters will be on hand to celebrate TNDC’s long history of providing safe, affordable housing and support services for low-income people in San Francisco. Individual tickets to TNDC’s Annual Birthday Dinner are $200 each, and tables start at $2,000. Sponsorship opportunities are available. About Kelly Cullen Community
Brother Kelly Cullen was one of the visionaries behind the formation of the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation. He cared deeply about people in The Tenderloin and was passionate about creating a thriving, diverse neighborhood. An Executive Director of TNDC from 1993 - 2005, Brother Kelly helped dramatically increase the affordable housing stock in the Tenderloin. Brother Kelly passed away in 2010, and his legacy lives on with the development of Kelly Cullen Community, a groundbreaking supportive housing environment that includes a primary care clinic.
Kelly Cullen Community is one of three pilot programs in the United States that combined housing, social services and patient-centered health care for chronically homeless people. By integrating affordable housing, care management and health services in one place, TNDC and its partners improve health outcomes for the vulnerable men and women caught in a revolving door of emergency rooms, detox and other crisis services.

About Darryl Smith and Laurie Lazer
Darryl Smith and Laurie Lazer have been leaders in the neighbor arts scene in San Francisco for close to three decades. As Co-Founders/Directors of the Luggage Store Gallery (also known as the 509 Cultural Center), their mission is to deliver multi-disciplinary arts programming that is accessible to, and reflective of, the Bay Area's residents.
The Luggage Store Gallery runs two locations at 509 Ellis Street and 1007 Market Street, which continually host a wide range of fine and performing arts. Working in collaboration with local schools, nonprofits and Tenderloin residents, their approach is frequently collaborative, exploratory and cross-cultural.
Darryl and Laurie were also instrumental in creating a vibrant public garden and mural space adjacent to the Gallery Annex. Over the course of nine years, a formerly blighted and unsafe alleyway in the Tenderloin transformed into a unique urban asset. Now a lush oasis of trees, water features and mosaic tile walkways, the space is often referred to with great pride by neighbors as the Tenderloin National Forest.
