Thinking Machines: Design, Form, and Function

SEE EVENT DETAILS
How is the design process being changed by technological innovation? How is form being shaped by emergent tools and materials? What is the place of design in shaping human experience?

Doors open at 6 pm for viewing of the special exhibition Cult of the Machine. At 7 pm, the conversation will begin in Koret Auditorium. Continue the discussion at our cash bar and mingle from 8–9:30 pm.

Jacob Ward, former editor-in-chief of Popular Science, now Al Jazeera and CNN Correspondent and a Berggruen Fellow at Stanford's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences

Yves Béhar is a design entrepreneur who believes that holistic product, digital, and brand design are cornerstones of any business. He is the founder and CEO of fuseproject, an integrated design and branding firm established in 1999, which is at work designing the de Young’s new art and cognition gallery for children and their caregivers. Béhar has collaborated with such companies as Herman Miller, GE, Puma, PayPal, SodaStream, Samsung, Issey Miyake, Prada, and Nivea, garnering over 200 awards. He believes that design should be a force for positive social and environmental change, and his work on One Laptop Per Child and See Better to Learn Better have made him the only designer to be honored with two INDEX Awards, as well as a Top 25 Visionary by Time magazine. He has also been featured in CNN Style and Vogue.
