THINKING FWD: USF ART + ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS EXPLORE IDENTITY IN THE MODERN WORLD. The Thacher Gallery at the University of San
Francisco announces the 18th Thacher Art + Architecture Annual, running from May 5 to June 25, 2017. The Awards ceremony will take place Friday, May 5, at 4 PM in the Maier Room in Fromm Hall. A reception will follow in the gallery.
In its 18th year, the Thacher Annual features fine art, design, architecture, audio, and web pieces from 39 USF students. USF’s Curatorial Practicum undergraduate class organized the exhibition, and a professional jury chose the final exhibited pieces. The judges included social architect Kelly Gregory, visual artist Jamil Hellu, multidisciplinary artist Erica Molesworth, and Jennie Yoon, Registrar at Catharine Clark Gallery.
This year’s undergraduate exhibition displays the various mediums in which students have applied their studies to express diverse perspectives. The show’s artwork conveys an undeniable forward momentum, and its title, Thinking FWD:, reflects the artists’ outlook and mission. Colleen Barrett’s Kaulana N? Pua: Famous Are These Flowers explores Hawaii’s colonial past through an interactive website. Kristie Lang’s print, Anti- Trump Aerobics, casts a humorous light on uncertain times. Sara Gibbs’s 3D wall display, Sassy Pants, sends a strong message against undesired advances. Additionally, many students such as Jackie Isbell, Rawan Almobarak, and David Hu use self-portraiture to examine their developing personal identities and artistic sensibilities.
