THE ULTRAVIOLET PIRATES: Riff Raff + DJ Whoo Kid

If ever there was a rapper famous solely for being an icon, it's Riff Raff (aka Horst Simco, Jody Husky, The Peach Panther, and so on). Bejeweled, brightly adorned with neon, and constantly hustling (he burns with the energy of a dude handing you his self published CD at a mall entrance), Riff Raff has been a household name for at least a decade. Known more for just being Riff Raff than anything else hasn't exactly hurt the native Texan - in fact, it's basically the millennial way. And as a leader of his generation, he's used his connections and fan base to build his empire: from MySpace of yesteryear to his more than one million Instagram followers. Do they all know what Riff Raff sounds like? Maybe not - but his visual style and swag is instantly recognizable. In brief - Riff Raff makes EDM tinged rap music that harkens back to simpler times and themes (money, cars, ladies). Beat drops and bass and a healthy dose of lyrical non-chalance. Music to party to. A southern fried Mickey Avalon. Not a joke, but not too far removed from the world of comedy (or performance art) either. And let's not forget, the man has rubbed elbows with celebs of all makes and models: Katy Perry, Andy Milonakis, Wiz Khalifa. And if anything can bestow the average music listener with a feeling of party power, it's a live set by the cranberry vampire himself.
