The State is an American sketch comedy troupe, whose television show The State, aired on MTV from 1993 - 1995. The eleven members of the group met as students at New York University. After graduation, they were hired by MTV to contribute sketches to You Wrote It, You Watch It, hosted by Jon Stewart, and were then given their own show based on the strength of their work. After a disastrous move to CBS in 1995, the group released a book entitled State by State with the State. Since then, members of the group have continued to work together, creating projects such as Reno 911, Wet Hot American Summer, and Stella, as well as writing and/or directing several feature films including Night at the Museum I and II, Role Models, Drop Dead Gorgeous, and others. Group members appear in countless television shows and movies.
