The School of Fierce Play Open House

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The School of Fierce Play is for people who want to develop a physical, sensory approach in their creative practice, whatever their creative practice may be. "It's like CrossFit(R) for artists." Lead instructors are Ragged Wing Ensemble Artistic and Executive Directors Amy Sass and Anna Shneiderman, and they're hosting a free open house on Thursday, August 23 at 7 p.m. at The Flight Deck in Oakland.

Sass will direct three weeklong courses, the first of which, "Story," will take place September 8 -14. The following courses, "Body" and "Environment," will take place in January and June 2019, respectively. Each course includes 27 hours of instruction, with hours Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The coursework is designed to sharpen skills in dramatic storytelling, non-verbal communication, public speaking, improvisation, environmental awareness and visual art techniques. Each course is $400 with some scholarships and work trade opportunities available.

Starting in November, Shneiderman will teach an arts business course, titled "Playshop for Creative Entrepreneurs." Topics to be addressed include entity structure, capital generation, budgets, marketing and communications, and staffing. The cost of enrollment is $400 with some scholarships and work trade opportunities available.

"We designed this course for artists of all stripes who want to learn how to make the business end of their arts practice work without compromising their values," said Shneiderman. "Creative enterprise is the backbone of the new equitable economy, and we need to take responsibility for growing a creative sector that truly supports artists and our communities."
