The Rough Patch in Midlife Relationships: How Clinicians Can Help

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Nile Hall (see times)
Despite our warranted skepticism about the cliche of the "midlife crisis," we all witness daily the reality of midlife turbulence and malaise, often focused on the viability and vitality of long-term intimate relationships. There's a very deep, meaningful process going on in mid-adulthood that is not captured by red sports cars or by our current psychological theories. Today, we live longer lives, question the value of monogamy, and search for family structures that balance security and the expression of authentic desire. In this talk, Dr. Daphne de Marneffe will propose a more complex and useful model for why relationships in mid-adulthood are so hard; discuss what clinicians get right and wrong in trying to help long-term couples; and offer a path for how individuals and couples can move through the rough patches in their relationships with integrity and love.

Following the keynote address, Leslie Bell will be in conversation with Dr. de Marneffe about the challenges of midlife, couple relationships, and keeping relationships going in midlife. The conversation will also address how clinicians can help clients to not just weather the rough patch but make use of it to develop further, in their relationship and as individuals. There will be an opportunity for Q&A after the conversation.

Continuing Education units are available.

Daphne de Marneffe, PhD, is a psychologist and author of THE ROUGH PATCH: MARRIAGE AND THE ART OF LIVING TOGETHER and MATERNAL DESIRE: ON CHILDREN, LOVE, AND THE INNER LIFE. She is also a contributing editor to Parents Magazine with work featured in the New York Times, O Magazine, NPR, and more.

Leslie C. Bell, PhD, LCSW, is a psychotherapist, sociologist, and author of HARD TO GET: TWENTYSOMETHING WOMEN AND THE PARADOX OF SEXUAL FREEDOM.

For over 45 years, The Psychotherapy Institute has provided affordable psychotherapy to Bay Area residents as well as continuing education and advanced training to psychotherapists.
