9 am - 5 pm

Samadhi is the last limb of the eight-limbed (astanga) path of Yoga described by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutra, and is also the third division of the Eightfold Noble Path taught by Shakyamuni Buddha upon his enlightenment. The Sanskrit word samadhi refers to a state of consciousness which is calm, stable and concentrated. Sages in many traditions have practiced samadhi going back to the time even before the Buddha. Both Yoga and Buddhism teach practices which help to develop the mind and body of samadhi, including various practices of mindfulness and tranquility.

In this daylong Zen and Yoga retreat, we will practice mindfulness, introspection and tranquility in asana (yoga posture) and zazen (seated meditation), bringing mind and body together into harmonious functioning.

We will alternate periods of asana practice with sitting meditation and meditative walking in the beautiful Green Gulch garden, giving special attention to the breath in each of these practices.

Due to the meditative nature of this retreat, we will practice silence throughout the day, including a silent lunch in the Green Gulch dining room. All levels of practitioners are welcome, including those new to yoga or meditation.

You are welcome to bring your own yoga props.

Fees: $90; $81 current SFZC members; $72 limited income.
Fee includes a delicious, organic lunch cooked in the Green Gulch kitchen.
Scholarships available.
