After suffering a debilitating stroke, Aurelio Roldán, a proud family patriarch, refuses to admit how desperately he needs the caregiving efforts of his granddaughter, Juanita, who has dropped out of college to take care of him. Having raised Juanita since she was a little girl, Aurelio finds himself fighting to maintain his paternal authority, when Juanita's estranged father, Reggie, unexpectedly comes to town.
A domestic drama about family sacrifice, the passing of generations, and fatherly love, The Paymaster's Dream also explores how interfamilial racism and homophobia can destroy the people we love.
