“The Manic Monologues” is an original play consisting of nearly twenty diverse, true stories of mental illness, to be performed for the first time at Stanford University from May 2-4, 2019. Mental illness is taboo, even in Silicon Valley, even in the progressive Bay Area.
When Zachary Burton experienced his first psychotic break and following bipolar diagnosis as a Ph.D. student at Stanford, his co-founder (Elisa Hofmeister of Stanford Medicine) and he were struck by the absence of relatable, lived experiences. 1 in 4 Americans experiences a mental health condition in any given year, so why isn’t there conversation?
Zachary and Elisa are working with an international team including Victoria Maxwell, a performing artist living with multiple mental illnesses and featured in The New York Times, CNN, WSJ, and Psychology Today; Dr. Rona Hu, who was Medical Director of Stanford Hospital’s acute psychiatric inpatient unit for 20 years, was an advisor to Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why,” and is a creator of theatrical vignettes on Asian American mental health; Tom Shroder, who as ghost writer and editor has been responsible for multiple New York Times bestsellers and as former editor of The Washington Post Magazine oversaw two Pulitzer Prize-winning stories; and Dr. Seema Yasmin, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, medical doctor, and author. The production benefits from critical input by playwright and Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Freed.
This performance will feature brave, true stories from people living across the world. These stories convey the struggle and pain of mental illness, but also the humor, triumph, and joy. They will challenge and inform your ideas about what it means to be touched by a mental health disorder. The stories we share aim to disrupt stigma surrounding mental illness, and to show that many of us defy stereotypes by showing that though (and perhaps even at times because) we have a mental illness, we are also extremely high-functioning.
