The Making of a Diplomat

SEE EVENT DETAILS
In an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world, effective diplomats are more crucial to our country’s success than ever before. But what makes an effective diplomat, and can these skills be taught?

The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) is the U.S. government’s premiere foreign affairs training academy, preparing diplomats to advance U.S. foreign policy objectives abroad. Foreign languages to leadership skills, technical issues and tradecraft competencies, FSI prepares the government’s foreign affairs professionals to face the challenges of working in every country around the globe. What does a day in the life of a diplomat-in-training look like? What new challenges do diplomats face in a rapidly changing and chaotic world? What knowledge and capabilities must they possess in order to be successful? What are best practices in diplomatic training, and how are these practices changing? Technology and remote learning are reshaping education today; how can technology and new online learning strategies be leveraged?

Ambassador Nancy McEldowney draws upon her current role as the Director of the Foreign Service Institute and her past experience as Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria and as Chargé and Deputy Chief of Mission in Turkey and Azerbaijan to address these questions on the future of U.S. diplomacy and American leadership in the world.

SPEAKER:

Nancy McEldowney
Director of the Foreign Service Institute, U.S. Department of State

MODERATOR:

Mary Karem McKey
Director, Institute of International Education, San Francisco
