San Francisco’s Presidio Dance Theatre (www.presidiodance.org) presents The Little Lantern, based on the popular book written by beloved Palestinian author Ghassan Kanafani, with libretto and choreography by PDT Artistic Director Sherene Melania.
The Little Lantern tells the story of a princess who, seeking her rightful place on the throne, must bring sunlight into her family’s palace. Melania’s signature style of ethno-classical ballet seamlessly blends Near & Middle-Eastern folkloric dances with classical ballet. The production illuminates the brilliance of a woman’s ingenuity and celebrates cultural traditions often overlooked in the Western art world. Composed by George Somi with ethnic music and lyrics by Fathi al-Jarrah, this family-friendly event is a beautiful re-telling of Kanafani’s enchanting work that reminds us to see that children have the power to bring light to dark places everywhere.
