The Hidden History of Slavery and Eugenics In California

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Race and science stand at the core of how humans have separated and marginalized others.

About this Event: The Hidden History of Slavery in California and Eugenics is a one-day, interactive workshop for teachers in the bay area region. Participants will explore the history of slavery in California and role that scientific racism played in defending this system. Educators will be introduced to a variety of resources, participant-centered pedagogical approaches they can leverage in their classrooms and be introduced to new scholars.

Over the course of the day, we will explore the "What" of these histories. What was the scope and duration of slavery in California? What was/is eugenics and how was this ideological movement related to the scientific racism used to justify and uphold the institution of slavery? What are the implications of this history for the practice of democracy in the present? With this knowledge, educators will conclude the day by exploring the opportunities and challenges associated with teaching this history, complicating the historical narrative, and engaging students in this process of historical illumination.

Hosted by KQED in partnership with Milton Reynolds, Laura Atkins, UC Berkeley History Social Science Project, Lick Wilmerding High School, ACLU Northern California, Equal Justice Society, California Historical Society.
