Dr. Lori Fenton (of the SETI Institute) will give a free, illustrated, non-technical talk on:
Being a Mars Rover: What It's Like on the Surface of Mars
in the Smithwick Theater, Foothill College in Los Altos Hills; part of the ongoing Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series.
On August 6, 2012, many people around the world gathered around TV's and computers to await news of NASAs latest mission to Mars. The complex, yet flawless landing of the rover Curiosity led to worldwide acclaim. What has NASAs youngest robot been up to since then, and what has it discovered? Where on Mars did it land and why was that site chosen above all others? Dr. Fenton will give an overview of the rovers capabilities, accomplishments, and plans on Mars and describe what it's really like on the surface of the red planet.
Planetary scientist Dr. Lori Fenton joined the SETI Institute as a principal investigator in 2006, and was awarded NASA's Carl Sagan Fellowship for Early Career Researchers that same year. Her primary research interests include how wind shapes a planetary surface (with work on Venus, Earth, Mars, and Titan); recent and ongoing climate change; and the movement of wind-blown sand and dust on a planet like Mars.
Foothill College is just off the El Monte Road exit from Freeway 280 in Los Altos. For directions and parking information, see: http://www.foothill.edu/news/transportation.php

* The SETI Institute
* The Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
We expect large crowds, so please arrive a little bit early to find parking. Having exact change or bills for the $3 parking fee helps speed up the line.
