BUILD, CODE2040 and Lava Mae with 2016 In Harmony with Hope™ Awards totaling $75,000

Elfenworks Celebrates a Decade of Hope and Recognizes Bay Area Women Creating Local Change with National Impact

(Burlingame, CA), September 29, 2016 — The Elfenworks Foundation, an organization that works for hope in America by fostering creative and technology solutions that advance change, will honor three social entrepreneurs at the 10th annual In Harmony with Hope Award ceremony at the Kohl Mansion in Burlingame, CA, on Thursday, September 29 at 6:30 p.m. This year’s recipients, all from the San Francisco Bay Area, each play a significant role in shaping a better future for our country by offering programs which leverage the potential of disadvantaged students through entrepreneurship, create pathways to success for top Black and Latino talent in the technology industry, and provide mobile hygiene services for the homeless.

The Elfenworks Foundation will present $25,000 each to these three pioneering women who are building hope and creating meaningful change: Suzanne McKechnie Klahr, Founder and CEO of BUILD; Laura Weidman Powers, Co-Founder and CEO of CODE2040; and Doniece Sandoval, Founder and CEO of Lava Mae. This year features two special guests, Master/Mistress of Ceremonies, Andrew Hart and Charly Kayle, hosts of KOIT-FM’s top-rated morning radio show.

In reflecting on the incredible individuals whom Elfenworks has honored with its In Harmony with Hope Award over the past decade, Elfenworks founder and CEO, Dr. Lauren Speeth, said, “This year’s honorees have very different skills and niches. Each has a vision for how to help that is different from the other, but they all share an address. They all dwell in possibility. That’s where hope lives. And their work keeps hope alive.”

For the sixth year in a row, Wells Fargo has committed to supporting the awards program with a generous $10,000 contribution. Beyond the financial award that is given to honorees, the event also provides an opportunity for an exciting exchange of ideas when past and current honorees meet and discuss a shared vision for a better America.

The In Harmony with Hope Award was created to accelerate and celebrate the success of social entrepreneurs who are working to bring compassionate vision into action. The list of alumni honorees includes visionaries like Rosalynn Carter and Dr. Paul Farmer. Over the past ten years, Elfenworks, through the In Harmony with Hope Award, has awarded cash grants and recognition to 30 social entrepreneurs who are working to create sustainable change in America.

Each changemaker expressed her gratitude for the In Harmony with Hope Award:

Doniece Sandoval, Founder / CEO, Lava Mae stated: “Lava Mae is thrilled to be honored with the In Harmony with Hope Award and deeply appreciates Elfenworks for amplifying our mission of taking radical hospitality to the street. We are proud of our commitment to bringing humanity, innovation, and collaboration to the way services are provided to those experiencing homelessness through our mobile shower services and Pop-Up Care Villages, and this recognition will further our efforts to restore dignity, rekindle optimism, and fuel a sense of opportunity among those moving through homelessness.”

Laura Weidman Powers, Co-Founder / CEO, CODE2040, added, “We at CODE2040 believe the tech sector, communities of color, and the country as a whole will be stronger if talent from all backgrounds is included in the creation of the companies, programs, and products of tomorrow. The In Harmony with Hope Award reflects the importance of an inclusive tech industry and helps to amplify the voices of marginalized communities."

“I am deeply honored to accept the In Harmony with Hope Award,” said Suzanne McKechnie Klahr, Founder and CEO of BUILD. “BUILD uses entrepreneurship to spark the development of key academic and life skills in high school students who face enormous barriers to opportunity. The In Harmony with Hope Award reflects the commitment we at BUILD have to serving our youth and helping them onto a successful path through school, career, and life.”
