Where and When We Died
(Où et quand nous sommes morts)
by Riad Gahmi
Translated by Rob Melrose
This dark, right-wing political comedy centers around Karim, an Arab living in the banlieues surrounding Paris (neighborhood housing projects similar to inner-city subsidized housing in the U.S.), and his ferocious clash with a middle-aged couple from a wealthy neighborhood. Soon after the knob to their entrance door breaks, the couple’s bourgeois apartment slowly transforms into a theater, where a battle, both ideological and territorial, unravelsIn a highly satirical voice, Riad Gahmi criticizes the politicization of immigrants in contemporary society by uncovering and exposing blatant racism. Moreover, this piece is an open call to reflect on these issues beyond the media’s sensationalist conjuring of empathy, which results in social division rather than social unity.
