The Center Jam - Contact Improv Class and Jam - July

SEE EVENT DETAILS
--- The Center Jam ---A monthly contact improv class and jam at the Center SF. We start with a beginner-friendly 1 hour fundamentals class, which aims to create a safe space for new dancers. Then, we transition to an all-levels open jam - an opportunity for more experienced dancers to continue their practice, and a great way for newer dancers to apply their new skills. Throughout the class and jam, we'll be accompanied by live improvised music.--- Details ---Class: 2pm - 3pm, $15Jam: 3pm - 5pm, $5 (Tickets Available at The Door)What to wear: clothes you feel comfortable dancing in, no shoesJoin our group to follow along for future jams: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1954217454797485/.--- Class Description ---I hear a similar story from a lot of beginning contact dancers: You see some people on a dance floor doing some crazy connective, acrobatic, intimate dance, and you're spellbound. You think to yourself: what *is* that? You ask someone and they tell you it's contact improvisation. So you check out a class or two, you try dancing with some people at ecstatic dance, but it's challenging, scary, and awkward. It doesn't quite click. In this class, our goal will be to help you make it click. We'll cover fundamental contact improv techniques in detail, both from an experiential perspective ("notice how it feels") and a technical perspective ("put your foot right there"). You'll walk away with a practical toolkit of skills that you can practice and apply the next time you dance. We'll have teaching assistants on hand to ensure that every student gets personalized instruction. We'll also discuss and practice starting/ending dances and other social aspects of contact improv, which can be intimidating to new dancers who are still learning the etiquette and norms of the dance. After the class, we'll have an open jam so you can practice the new skills you've learned in a freeform dance.--- About the teacher ---Jonah Kagan is a San Francisco-based contact improvisation dancer and teacher. He was once that guy gazing in awe at the contact dancers, wondering how he could possibly learn how to do that. His goal as a teacher is to help others get past their initial fear and learn basic skills to build confidence as a dancer.
