"THE BROOD is my version of KRAMER VS. KRAMER, but more realistic." - David Cronenberg

It's spooky season, and that means it's psychotherapy time...or rather "psychoplasmics" time at Queer Film Theory 101! We're headed out for a little self-reflection at The Somafree Institute of Psychoplasmatics in David Cronenberg's most personal and serious film THE BROOD from 1979. It's MARRIAGE STORY on mescaline!

Developed in the wake of Cronenberg's difficult divorce, THE BROOD is a startling interrogation into cycles of abuse, patriarchy, and the destruction of the nuclear family, complete with tiny murder goblins! Gorgeous Diva Nola Carveth (the iconic Samantha Eggar) is an unstable and traumatized woman undergoing intense and experimental therapy with Dr. Hal Raglan (Oliver Reed giving stunt daddy realness) at his private institute. As a custody battle between Nola and her ineffectual milquetoast ex-husband Frank (Art Hindle) intensifies, strange murders begin to occur, revealing a terrifying and bizarre manifestation of trauma and rage.

Toxic gender roles, parental failure, and pedophobia (fear of children) are all present in THE BROOD, a movie that posits "maybe heterosexuality is bad?" This gorgeous and provocative melodrama was released to both praise and claims of virulent misogyny and gynophobia, leaving its legacy complicated, but we never shy away from complications here at QFT101! No spoilers, but we're on the woman's side. Justice for Nola. These men done did her dirty. Come hang out with us for a night of processing and body horror - if you still want to get married and have kids after watching this movie, that is wild. (Micheal Foulk)
