Dr. Carlos Sanchez, Senior Professor and Senior Research Botanist at the National Botanic Garden (Cuba) of the University of Havana, received the National Award in Botany from the Cuban Society of Botany in 2013 as well as the prize from the University of Havana for the Best Scientific Book in 2000 and 2008 . Author of many scientific articles and a book about the ferns and lycophytes of Cuba, Dr. Sanchez has also given lectures and conducted research at universities in Brazil, Panama, Nicaragua, and Spain. In January, he was the Cuban botanical specialist for the 2016 People-to-People Cuba tour in support of the UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley.
Dr. Carlos Sanchez will present an overview of The Amazing Flora of Cuba. With more than 6,500 species of native plants, Cuba is among the world’s islands with the highest plant diversity. More than half of the plants are endemic to the island and found in habitats ranging from coastal wetlands to palm-studded grasslands and pine forests in mountain regions. Dr. Sanchez will talk about Cuba’s major plant families as well as current projects at the National Botanic Garden of Cuba.
