We the People deserve to be heard. The news has had its chance. The new president will have too many chances. And now it is our turn.
Since 2015, hundreds of communities across this nation have hosted People’s State of the Union events, coming together in homes, schools, houses of worship, and every sort of gathering space to share their own take on the state of our union. Inspired by these stories, a group of renowned poets compose sonnets, songs, and other poetic responses, performed and broadcast live. That performance is The Poetic Address to the Nation.
This year, on Saturday, March 11, YBCA is proud to present The 2017 Poetic Address to the Nation. Produced in collaboration with U.S. Department of Arts and Culture, a grassroots action network inciting creativity and social imagination to shape a culture of empathy, equity, and belonging, The 2017 Poetic Address to the Nation will be emceed by one of our country’s most provocative, original voices, Chinaka Hodge, together with musicians, poets, and others, and will address the Trump administration and our nation in the words of, and inspired by, our people.
Democracy is in our hands. And in our voices. And they will be heard on March 11, 2017, at 5PM at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
