Teatro ZinZanni
Love, chaos & dinner
by Cory Feldman
Teatro ZinZanni is an atypical dinner theater, to say the least. The show is held in an antique spiegeltent (circus tent) imported from Belgium. The European cabaret integrates contortionists, singers, food, and theatrics into one outstanding show. Although dinner theater is inherently geared toward old people and tourists, ZinZanni is definitely not tired or cliched.
The food is what you would expect considering that it's served to everyone simultaneously. Taste Catering cooks up standardized, but tasty continental fare. The service, on the other hand, is intentionally unpredictable, coming at a frenetic pace, waiters and waitresses leap and run. Wine glasses filled with confetti and tied to trays jokingly "douse" a table while across the room another couple is mockingly berated by the maitre'd.
Teatro ZinZanni pic01 Teatro ZinZanni eludes the typical kitch and clowning pitfalls by offering up genuine talent. The acting, singing, costumes, and presentation are all top notch. The juggling act involves six men and a bed. The erotic trapeze act is eye-popping. San Francisco's Kim Rene Nalley, gives a stunning blues performance while soprano Kirstin Clayton counters in opera. The cast hails from all over the world with talents as diverse as their nationalities.
The hefty $125 ticket includes a six course meal and a seat in the center of the action.
