Jack London Square presents the Taste of Oakland Festival, a benefit for YouthAid Non-Profit, July 7th from 12 to 6 p.m. This signature event celebrates Oakland and the Bay Area’s unique culture of independent and iconic musicians, culinary talents, and innovation in technology. The event is produced by Oakland’s own Dwayne Wiggins, a member of R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! and founder of Youth Aid Non-Profit, which provides free music lessons and business fundamentals to youth in the city of Oakland.
On July 7, before the festivities begin, KBLX host Nikki Thomas will lead a Soul Yoga session, and We United will host a soccer clinic for youth ages 5-18. Then, beginning at noon, event highlights include performances from Kymberly Jackson, Martin Luther, Carlos Reyes, and Tony! Toni! Toné!; a selection of video games from Stixx Gaming and a presentation on introductory coding, web design, and hackathons from Hidden Genius; a cooking demonstration from celebrity chef Nikki Shaw, who will create a meal utilizing Acta Non Verba’s fresh organic produce grown from the Oakland A’s garden; a dance clinic and performances curated by Carla Service, founder of Dance-A-Vision Entertainment; a karaoke bus that allows participants to record a song and miniature music video; diabetes and blood pressure health screenings from Kaiser Permanente; and a House of Music Art Museum, which will showcase the musical life of Dwanye Wiggins and Tony! Toni! Toné!
Taste of Oakland Festival adds a new dimension to the standard music and food festival format by providing youth internship opportunities where local students will shadow the production team for the day. Proceeds from the festival will benefit Youth Aid Non-Profit.
