Footloose presents Symbols of Love
Choreographed by Shahrzad Khorsandi and performed by Shahrzad Dance Company
Iranian-born dancer and choreographer, Shahrzad Khorsandi, creates unique contemporary Persian dance that includes quintessential Persian movements that are informed by training in other dance cultures. Her vision is to tap into the ancient mystical meanings in dances associated with Persian poetry, music and art. She hopes to bring awareness of our common humanity as citizens of the world to transcend the current political tensions.
Be part of this celebration of the Persian New Year. The dancers and audience get to interact bringing the true meaning of this holiday to life. It is about a new beginning, rebirth, and renewal. This is what Norouz, meaning "New Day" represents. The symbolic Haft-seen ("seven S's") comes to life, as dancers portray dynamic characteristics associated with each symbol, every dance emoting and inspiring love from a different perspective.
A pioneer in Persian dance, Shahrzad Khorsandi founded the Shahrzad Dance Academy in Richmond, California in 1996, and serves as its artistic director. She has dedicated her professional life to performing and teaching this beautiful and ancient dance form. Born and raised in Iran, Shahrzad holds a BA in Dance, and an MA in Creative Arts from San Francisco State University. Her dance training includes Modern, Jazz, Ballet, West African, Afro-Haitian and Flamenco. The company provides world-class art and cultural education and representation through Persian dance classes and performances via the organization's performing ensemble, Shahrzad Dance Company, and instructional tools such as DVDs, online classes, and Shahrzad's instructional Persian dance book, The Art of Persian Dance.
