Support Dan Rather’s Ashes to Gold documentary on the 1964 Tokyo Olympics
Find out how you can contribute to this important film project about a turning point in Japan’s history
The Tokyo 1964 Olympics marked Japan’s transformation from a defeated pariah nation to a prosperous democracy dedicated to improving the lives of its citizens and contributing to world peace.  That success involved a massive and controversial undertaking that literally transformed the face of Tokyo and the nation and set the country on a path to becoming the second largest economy in the world.
News icon Dan Rather and his production company are creating a documentary film, “Ashes to Gold”, that will explore the dramatic untold story behind the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. This promises to be a very interesting and significant documentary, particularly as the Games return to Tokyo in 2020. The film will shine an important light on the ability of Japan, which today faces unprecedented challenges, to rekindle the spirit of resourcefulness and resolve to remake itself once again as it did over 50 years ago.
We need your help in undertaking this project. The first phase of the documentary is to thoroughly research the build-up to the 1964 Olympics, identifying the key people and events that shaped the successful Games and the transformation of a nation that accompanied them. The research will provide the raw material that the director of the film will forge into the narrative to be portrayed in the documentary.
Creating “Ashes to Gold” provides a unique opportunity for all those with an interest in the Japan – U.S. relationship. News and Guts, Dan Rather’s film production company, and the Japan Society of Northern California have agreed to partner to raise funds for the documentary research. Tax deductible contributions can be made to the Japan Society of Northern California towards this goal.  All the products of that research will eventually be made available for public use without charge, an important addition to the scholarship of this era in history. Thus the research will not only help support the production of the documentary but will enhance significantly the information available for researchers, students, and others interested in this critical time in Japan’s post-war rise.
