Suicide Awareness and Prevention

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Eve Meyer, MSW, MHSA is presenting "Suicide Awareness and Intervention". This training is for community members as well as providers who work with adults, children, youth and families. Family and community members may feel helpless when a person is threatening suicide. Frontline staff face a difficult responsibility when responding to these situations. This training provides suicide prevention strategies and prepares community members and program staff to respond effectively.
Workshop Description: This workshop will define the magnitude of suicide deaths and attempts in the United States, the underlying causality of pain and its behavior, and the signals displayed by people with thoughts of suicide. A four-part assessment model, a triage method utilizing this model, and a method for matching the person to community resources will be presented.
Suicide threats and attempts are crises that often baffle human service professionals. They may happen at unexpected moments and seem difficult to defuse. This workshop explains who is at greatest risk, what common signals to look for, as well as what resources are available and where to find them. Through role plays and interaction with workshop participants, you will learn how to negotiate with a person who is saying they no longer want to live.
Workshop Objectives:

Study the demographic distribution of suicidal behavioral.
Learn the dynamics of emotional pain as it relates to suicide crisis.
Learn how to assess for risk of harm to self or others, using a four-part assessment model.
Learn three options for safety planning.
Explore resources available in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Eve Meyer’s family story influenced her desire to specialize in suicide prevention. Her parents and grandmother escaped a concentration camp in Southern France, setting out for the Spanish border. When they arrived the border guard determined that their papers were not in order. Rather than turning back, her mother, father and grandmother agreed to walk into the sea, taking her brother's hand and walking into the water. Her brother's screaming moved the guard and he said their papers were fine and they could enter Spain. They left for the United States on the last boat out of Cadiz.
Ms. Meyer was the Executive Director of Suicide Prevention for 30 years, from 1988 to 1918. She earned two Master's Degrees, one in Social Work and the other in Health Services Administration. Ms. Meyer wrote and produced public services announcements, broadcast on local television and radio stations. She gave testimony at hearings before the San Francisco Health Commission, Board of Supervisors, and other governmental forums. Ms. Meyer trained staff at local agencies, hospitals, corporations and public safety entities. She was the founding member of the Bay Area Suicide and Crisis Intervention Alliance. Her publications include articles such as: "History of Golden Gate Bridge Barrier Efforts," American Psychiatric Association Conference, 2009, 2011 and Suicide Prevention - An Open Door," San Francisco Medical Society Journal, 2007.
