At StoryNights, talented performers, actors, comics and writers take to the mic for a night of personal stories told live. Sometimes touching, sometimes inspiring, sometimes embarrassing but always real; these stories won’t shy away from true grit.
StoryNights host, David Nihill (Founder of FunnyBizz) and world-class storytellers perform 10 minute true stories. Tonight Nihill is joined by Brian Copeland, Marga Gomez, Corey Rosen, Kari Kiernan & Phil Griffiths!
MEET THE STORYTELLERS
Brian Copeland
Brian Copeland is an award-winning actor, comedian, author, playwright, television and radio talk show host based in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a standup comedian, Copeland has opened for such legendary performers as Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Ray Charles, The Temptations, Natalie Cole, Julio Iglesias, Ringo Starr and Gladys Knight. In 2004, Copeland debuted his first one-man play, Not a Genuine Black Man at the Marsh in San Francisco. This show went on to become the longest-running solo show in San Francisco theatrical history with over 800 performances. In 2006, he published a best-selling book based on Genuine. To date, Copeland has written and performed three subsequent critically acclaimed solo plays including The Waiting Period (2015 Theater Bay Area Award for Outstanding Production of a Solo Play), the hit Christmas show The Jewelry Box and The Scion (PBS affiliate KQED’s Best New Play of 2014). His new play, Grandma & Me: An Ode to Single Parents, debuts in San Francisco in the fall of 2017. In addition to his stage work, Copeland is a fixture in Bay Area broadcasting, where he has hosted programs on just about every television station, including KTVU (a five-year stint as cohost of Mornings on 2), ABC7 (host of the Emmy award-winning 7Live) and KNTV (the hit 2015 late night special Now Brian Copeland). He has also performed on MTV, A&E, NBC, VH1 and Comedy Central.
Marga Gomez
Marga Gomez is known for her work in solo performance and stand up comedy and for being one of the first openly lesbian performers in the nation. She has appeared on LOGO’s “One Night Stand Up,” Showtime’s “Latino Laugh Festival,” Comedy Central’s “Out There” and HBO’s “Comic Relief” at the invitation of Robin Williams who called her “Amazing… a lesbian Lenny Bruce.” She has been a guest on leading comedy podcasts Marc Maron’s “WTF,” “The Keith and The Girl Show” and Kevin Allison’s “Risk.” Her comic style has been described as “deliciously cheeky and incendiary” by the New York Times and “salaciously surreal” by the San Francisco Chronicle. The SF Weekly named Gomez one of “2016’s Artists To Watch.” Huffpost named her an “Agent of Change” in 2015. She is also a GLAAD Award winner, a Theater LA “Ovation Award” winner and triple winner of the San Francisco Bay Guardian’s “Best of The Bay Comedian Award.” Marga is also the writer/performer of eleven solo plays which have been presented Off-Broadway and internationally.
Corey Rosen
Corey Rosen is an actor, writer and visual effects producer who lives in San Francisco. He is a regular host of The Moth StorySlam series in the Bay Area, and his stories have been featured on The Moth Radio Hour. Corey began his career writing for Jim Henson Productions and Comedy Central in New York City. As an actor, Corey can be see as a main stage company player at BATS Improv, where he improvises feature length plays. Corey is the creator of The A**hole Monologues: A Comedy For Anyone Who Has One, Knows One, or Is One. As a computer graphics artist, his film credits include Iron Man, Grindhouse, Ted, and The Phantom Menace. He is currently writing the script for a ride-film at a Chinese Theme Park.

Leaving Dublin, Ireland, where he was born and raised until the age of 22, David got drunk on travel and never quite hit the sobriety of it. A bestselling author, David has been featured in Inc, NPR, Huffington Post, Forbes, Lifehacker and the Irish Times, and was recently part of the Irish Kings of Comedy Tour, SF Sketchfest, the Ventura Comedy Festival, Ukiah Comedy Alley, and the Kansas City Irish Festival. A multiple Moth Storyslam winner, Grandslam finalist and occasional host David has also told tales at Porchlight, The Naked Truth, Fireside and Litquake. Always a funny storyteller, these days he calls San Francisco home when immigration officials permit.
Kari Kiernan
Kari Kiernan is a writer and storyteller living in San Francisco. Her work has appeared in Skirt! Magazine and The Morning News as well as onstage at Porchlight, The Vent, Naked Truth and Opium Magazine’s Literary Death Match, among others. She also has a dormant master’s degree and a day job. Phil Griffiths
As far as mid-life crisis go, Phil Griffiths’ wife stacks his career in stand up comedy as better than a drug addiction but worse than him having a mistress. With his dry deadpan humor, Phil performs all over the state and shares his slightly off observations on life. Phil has opened for Brad Williams, Jermaine Fowler and Myq Kaplan. Most recently Phil was a top ten finalist in the 2016 San Francisco Comedy Competition. He has also performed in San Francisco Sketchfest, as well as the San Diego, Sacramento, Chico and Santa Cruz Comedy Festivals.
