Squaw Valley Community of Writers Poetry Benefit Reading

On Friday, June 20, 2014, the Squaw Valley Community of Writers Poetry Benefit Reading will feature former U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Hass joined by award-winning poets C.D. Wright, Harryette Mullen, Don Mee Choi, and Matthew Zapruder who will read from their work at the First Unitarian Church in San Francisco. This gathering of the staff poets from this year's Community of Writers' Summer Poetry Workshop in Squaw Valley will raise money for the Poetry Program's financial aid and scholarships. ROBERT HASS is the former Poet Laureate of the United States (1995-1997), translator, essayist, and director of the Poetry Program of the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley. The author of over twelve collections and translations, Hass has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize, MacArthur Fellowship, and the National Book Award. C.D. WRIGHT is a former MacArthur Fellow, professor at Brown University, and author of more than a dozen books, most recently, One With Others: a little book of her days which won the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Lenore Marshall Prize and was a finalist for the National Book Award. DON MEE CHOI is a translator of six books and author of The Morning News is Exciting (Action Books, 2010). She has received a 2011 Whiting Writer's Award and the 2012 Lucien Stryk Translation Prize. HARRYETTE MULLEN is the author of several award-winning poetry collections, including Recyclopedia, winner of a PEN Beyond Margins Award, and Sleeping with the Dictionary, a finalist for a National Book Award, National Book Critics Circle Award, and Los Angeles Times Book Prize. MATTHEW ZAPRUDER is the author of four collections of poetry, most recently Come On All You Ghosts (Copper Canyon 2010), a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and Sun Bear, forthcoming from Copper Canyon. Books by the poets will be available for purchase and signing.
