"Here" ~ This dance spectacular is a rare, creative fusion of identity and culture through Traditional Korean Dance, American Contemporary dance and live Indie-Rock music. The special dance work has been developed through a unique United States and Korean collaborative exchange with OngDance Company, known for its involvement promoting cross-cultural understanding and Korean artistry. Featuring technique with improvisation, technology with body, precision with wild abandon, motion with live sound, theory with practice - this dance piece will feature an ensemble cast of thirteen SSU student dancers and five dancers of Cali & CO dance, with music performed by the band Matt EL."Here" is directed by Sonoma State Theater Arts & Dance faculty member Christine Cali (CALI & CO dance); in collaboration with composer and musician Matt Langlois; Kyoungil Ong (OngDance Company); and SSU Dept. of Theater Arts & Dance faculty member Tony Bish creating set, lighting and costume design. A post show discussion with directors, choreographers and guest artists will follow the performance.

"In the absence of" ~ Choreographed by Kristen Daley in collaboration with eight SSU dance students, this work is a kinetic, vigorous and emotional investigation around a group finding solace and safety in a physical and internal world that seems to be falling and drifting apart. Current and personal events in the world have impacted the creation of this work as it investigates isolation, boundaries, loss and the fragility of life. The dance asks “What will you do in the absence of…?” and features an original score composed by Jesse Olsen Bay specifically for the work.

"Cease" ~ This dance work is a reflection on the tragedies of gun violence in this country and a dedication to honor those whose lives have been ended or torn apart by gun violence. It is a collection of embodied personal stories from SSU students, as well as young men from Alameda County’s Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro, CA. With choreography collaboration by Jennifer Meek, Sonoma State University guest artist and contemporary dance teacher at RoCo Dance in Mill Valley, "Cease" features original score composed by Aaron Gold.

"Modus" ~ This dance work, choreographed by visiting guest artist Eric Handman and featuring music by Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto, was created during a recent week-long dance residency at Sonoma State University. The Dept. of Theatre Arts & Dance is thrilled to have Eric Handman teaching and collaborating in the Dance Program. An Associate Professor at the University of Utah’s Department of Modern Dance, Handman is regularly commissioned by various companies and departments across the United States. Prior to receiving his MFA from the University of Utah in 2003, he was a professional dancer in various New York-based contemporary dance companies such as Doug Varone and Dancers, Nicholas Leichter Dance and Joy Kellman and Company.
