Speaking the Unspoken: A supervision symposium for psychotherapists

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Nile Hall (see times)
The Psychotherapy Institute is proud to present a symposium for psychotherapists who work in supervisory roles titled "Speaking the Unspoken: Creating a Supervisory Field for Exploration, Uncertainty and Necessary Risk" with a keynote by Stephanie Z. Chen, PhD joined by discussants Cressida Forester, PsyD & Taquelia Washington, LCSW and panelists Janie Riley, LMFT & Karen Naifeh, PhD on February 2, 2019.

What elements of the supervisory relationship enable the unspoken to be spoken? How do we encourage, nurture, and enable the most difficult conversations, admissions, and amends within the supervisory dyad/group? "Othering" (e.g., prejudices, microaggressions, etc.) has deep conscious and unconscious histories and roots; how can the clinical supervisor work to make the supervisory field safe enough for the open, curious, and respectful dialogue necessary for deep and transformative understanding and learning?

Drawing on Thomas Ogden's 2005 paper, "What I Would Not Part With," a wealth of research, and personal experience supervising and teaching about sensitive differences, Dr. Chen will offer a presentation to stimulate thinking and discussion about this very relevant and timely topic. Two discussants, Taquelia Washington and Dr. Cressida Forester, will then elaborate on the meaning and application of these ideas. In the afternoon, panelists Janie Riley and Dr. Karen Naifeh will present their clinical work in private practice, agencies, and group settings to further the conversation. Throughout the day, small group discussions will provide opportunity for individual questions, ideas, and consultation.

CE units are available.

For over 45 years, The Psychotherapy Institute has provided affordable psychotherapy to Bay Area residents as well as continuing education and advanced training to psychotherapists.
