The Salon Presents
Minutes of Glory and Other Stories

The Salon is JCCSF’s popular daytime series dedicated to presenting the best of today’s literary writers in an intimate setting. For our upcoming salon, we are delighted to welcome one of Africa’s best-loved writers, Ngugi wa Thiong'o. Globally renowned for his evocative novels depicting postcolonial Kenya, Ng?g? was imprisoned without charge in 1977 at Kamiti Medium Security Prison. Refusing to be silenced, he wrote his narratives on toilet paper under 24-hour surveillance over the course of a year. Ngugi joins us for a conversation and reading from Minutes of Glory and Other Stories, his latest story collection covering the period of British colonial rule and resistance in Kenya to the bittersweet experience of independence. Tickets include culinary delights from local purveyors.

Ngugi wa Thiong’o was born in Limuru, Kenya, in 1938. He is the author of A Grain of Wheat; Weep Not, Child and Petals of Blood, as well as Birth of a Dream Weaver and Wrestling with the Devil. He has been nominated for, among other honors, the Man Booker International Prize and is currently Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine.
