SOULSKIN DANCE announces its 8th season and the West Coast Premiere of CLOSER, a dance film about relationships in a time of isolation, and the live work-in-progress, THE AWAKENING, part disco celebration and part prayer.
Following its upcoming October premiere at Aspen Fringe Festival, SOULSKIN presents the West Coast premiere of the new dance film, CLOSER, created by SOULSKIN Dance Artistic Director and Choreographer Adrianna Thompson in collaboration with SOULSKIN Resident filmmaker Jaco Strydom. CLOSER was created over seven months during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when intimacy and physical connection was seen as particularly dangerous and even forbidden, and our isolation has been exacerbated by a growing political divide in our nation.
"Never before has misinformation and politics so blatantly threatened the lives of hundreds of millions of people, and this divide only worsened with George Floyd's murder and its stark exposure of racial injustice in our country," says Thompson. "CLOSER reveals our need for human connection and the diversity and inclusion that is essential in a true democracy."
Also on the program is the work in progress, THE AWAKENING, which is both a celebration and a prayer to sow the seeds of reconciliation and compassion in a time of division.
Thompson explains that as the course of the pandemic shifts, "We are awakening. We are nearing a time of celebration and gratitude. Also, a time of mourning and rediscovery, of finding a way back to a united nation in a time of great division."
