Amey Mathews, an established local yoga teacher and co-owner of Yoga Within in Aptos, will lead a six-week yoga philosophy course on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, focusing on Chapter Two: Sadhana Pada. The series will run March 15 through April 19 in a lecture and discussion format (no asana), going verse by verse through the entire chapter. It will primarily utilize Mr. TKV Desikachar's translation of the Sutras, "The Heart of Yoga." The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali were written roughly 2000 years ago, and remain among the most important yoga texts of all time.
All course sessions will build on one other, so it’s recommended to attend the entire series. However, each talk will also stand on its own, so it’s possible to attend individual sessions as well. Course fee is $100 for the entire series by pre-registration, or $20 for individual sessions.
Amey Mathews received her first teaching certificate from the White Lotus Foundation in 1999; has twice attended the Iyengar Institutue in Puna, India; and has studied locally with Kofi Busia since 2001. She has studied the Yoga Sutras with Kausthub Desikachar and other teachers in the lineage of Krishnmacharya. She teaches several ongoing yoga classes at Yoga Within, leads occasional weekend retreats, and has previously taught an overview course on the complete Yoga Sutras text. She says, “In teaching yoga, it is my goal to impart to my students a sense of enthusiasm, curiosity, and dedication towards their practice.â€
