SFDanceworks is a mixed repertory company dedicated to the presentation and commissioning of world class contemporary dance. This summer's program will feature the return of choreographers JA Collective and Yue Yin, and the Bay Area debut of Emma Portner.
Best known for their intricate and spellbinding choreography created for pop music videos, the duo of Aidan Carberry and Jordan Johnson (JA Collective) are Los Angeles-based choreographers and dancers who trained under William Forsythe at the University of Southern California. Their new work, currently untitled, is a quintet for SFDanceworks veterans Isaac Bates-Vinueza, Sarah Chou, Emily Hansel, Lani Yamanaka and, in his company debut, Ja'Moon Jones.
SFDanceworks is also proud to present the Bay Area debut of Emma Portner and the North American premiere of her duet 'elephant,' which premiered in Copenhagen last year. "Portner is the real deal," an artist who choreographs "with purpose and subtlety," exclaimed Matthew Paluch for Gramilano. "Portner is from another planet, and we're all still light years away."
Finally, SFDanceworks welcomes the return of Yue Yin, the founder and artistic director of YY Dance Company (YYDC) based in New York. Born and raised in China, she studied at the prestigious Shanghai Dance Academy and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and her trademark style fuses movement from both Chinese folk and contemporary dance.
SFDanceworks will present the Bay Area premiere of Yin's duet titled 'A Measurable Existence,' to be performed by Bates-Vinueza and frequent YYDC collaborator, Nat Wilson. 'A Measurable Existence' was commissioned by Gibney and premiered at New York Live Arts in 2022.
$15 - $135.
Presented by SFDanceworks.
July 10 - 12: Thurs - Sat at 7:30pm
