Welcome to the San Francisco Maritime Association’s 15th Annual Maritime Ball, A Salute to the Matthew Turner.
This will be a great event, as we salute the new 130-foot sailing vessel, Matthew Turner, built for youth maritime education programs, and launched on April 1st this year. Named for the Bay Area’s most prolific designer and builder of sailing ships, the brigantine Matthew Turner is the first wooden ship to be built in Northern California in over 85 years.
Proceeds from the Maritime Ball will help provide needed funding for the San Francisco Maritime Park Association’s award-winning education programs aboard the National Park’s historic ships at Hyde Street Pier, and our 1943 submarine, USS Pampanito.
We strive to teach future generations about the importance of human engagement with the sea via our own experiential and STEM-based programs. Over 12,000 school children attend our programs annually, many of whom rely on scholarships which are largely funded by contributions raised at this event, which lends critical support to our mission: “bringing our maritime heritage to life..through education, preservation and philanthropy”.
