What is a Create-a-thon?
At Create-a-thons, writers, artists, videographers, technologists, and others come together and spend a weekend working on creative projects around the theme of Universal Basic Income in order to raise awareness and support for the idea. These projects range widely in scope and perspective--from crowdfunding Basic Income giveaways to short story anthologies on how this policy might affect different facets of society.
The event will start on a Friday evening, continue all day on Saturday, and run through Sunday afternoon. During that time, participants will pitch ideas for projects, form into groups, and then work towards making their ideas a reality. At the end of the weekend, teams will present what they’ve accomplished to the full group.
What do you mean by projects?
The way we use it, “project†is a pretty open-ended term. A project is any group or individual creation that helps more people get on board with the idea of basic income.
Past projects have included everything from short films to a crowdfunded basic income sweepstakes, to projects that allow self-organized communities to provide their members with a basic income.
Typically, projects fall into one of three categories:
Research: growing the evidence base
Education: raising awareness
Organizing: building support
If you’d like to see even more examples of past projects, check out our past Create-a-thons here.

What does the registration fee pay for?

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Public transportation is the best way to travel to the event. The closest BART / Muni station is Powell St., which is about 2 blocks from the location. There is some street parking available, though not much, and a large parking garage across the street from Westfield Mall on Mission St between 4th and 5th St.
