Redwood City, CA, May 15, 2013 – The Sequoia High School PTSA announces the first Sequoia International Festival on Saturday May 25, 2013 from 11 AM to 7 PM on Sequoia High School grounds at 1201 Brewster Ave in Redwood City.

Thanks to a grant from the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission and the PTSA, the public is invited to attend for free and help the school celebrate the diversity of cultures found in our school and in our community.

Nearly 20 different performing groups from cultures around the world, 25 vendors, gourmet international foods from 5 different continents, 15 games and rides, 10 Sequoia High School clubs, and almost 200 volunteers will be there creating a fun filled day in the sun for every age.

Driven by a desire to celebrate the amazing multicultural diversity on campus that contributes to the unique inclusive and supportive culture at Sequoia High School, the PTSA chose to create the Sequoia International Festival this year. Organized by SHS Parent and Redwood City Lebanese Festival organizer, Marie Salama along with co-Chair Julie Di Bona, the Festival will be selling food and games to help raise funds for Safe-And-Sober Graduation Activities and for Sequoia Clubs.

The PTSA invites you to come race against friends on the double racing slide, show your brawn with the High Striker, pet a bunny at the Petting zoo, climb on the rock wall, get your face painted or a glitter tattoo at the art club booth, shop for artisan-crafted gifts for your graduate or friend in the vendor Marketplace, or enjoy Lebanese kebabs, Chinese won-tons, Italian Lasagna, Mexican Carne Asada, or many other choices in our international food booths.

Come watch Math teacher Steven Wong battle against 4 players at the same time at chess. Find out how to repair a bike at the Bike Club. Create a unique charm necklace at Origami Owl. Learn how to weave your own Kente fabric at Africause. Come discover a multitude unique crafts, games, and gifts at the Festival. Festival goers will find something for every age to have fun.

Our stage will be firing up Redwood City with music and dancing all day long with an international and eclectic mix of performers. The schedule will start out with the Sequoia High School Band under the direction of teacher extraordinaire, Jane Woodman. The stage will then be graced with a diverse group of dancers from cultures around the world including Sequoia High School Advanced Dancers, Menlo Park Dance Expressions Performing Company, Ballet Folklórico México Vivo, the Foster City Filipino-American Association, Arenui Polynesian dancers and drummers, Smorgaschord 6-part harmonies and vocal percussion, and many more. We’ll be ending the day with the stage roaring with the voices of modern blues queens, Remi and Chloe with SHS-based The Extracts.

A special thanks go to all our sponsors and donors including the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission, Etched Media Corporation, Larry Kuzni of Car Audio Warehouse, Nutritious Delicious Foods Company, Dollar Deal, and Prudential California Realtor Chet Lane, Recology San Mateo, US Bank, Lucky Supermarkets, Safeway Supermarkets, Canyon Inn, RC Bigelow Tea, I Dumpling, Target, and Kmart.
