Seeking Asylum x Poets Reading the News

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Poets Reading The News invites you to a powerful poetry happening in the heart of San Francisco! Following a summer of passionate #CloseTheCamps protests, let's gather for an evening of deep listening, extraordinary poetry and community solidarity. If this is a border crisis, who created it? How do we support migrant identities and experiences? And where do we find hope? Join us to hear Bay Area-based poets Josiah Luis Alderete, Alan Pelaez Lopez and Kim Harvey - and bring something for the open mic to follow!

++About the Poets++
Alan Pelaez Lopez is an Afro-Indigenous poet, collage, installation and adornment artist from what is now known as Oaxaca, México. Their poetry has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and "Best of the Net" and their debut collection, Intergalactic Travels: poems from a fugitive alien, is forthcoming from The Operating System Press (2020). Their chapbook to love and mourn in the age of displacement is out at the end of 2019. They currently serve as a poet-in-residence at the Museum of the African Diaspora.

Josiah Luis Alderete is a full blooded Pocho spanglish speaking poet from La Area Bahia who learned to write poetry in the kitchen of his Mama's Mexican restaurant. He first began performing his poetry in San Francisco's Mission District back in the 90's at Cafe Babar and was a founding member of San Francisco's outspoken word troupe The Molotov Mouths. He is also a radio insurgente whose stories have appeared on KALW's "Crosscurrents" and whose show "The Spanglish Power Hour" aired on KPFA. He curates and hosts the monthly Latinx reading series SPEAKING AXOLOTL in Oakland. Josiah Luis Alderete's book of poems - "Baby Axolotls y Old Pochos" - is forthcoming from Black Freighter Press.

Kim Harvey is a San Francisco Bay Area poet and Associate Editor at Palette Poetry. Her work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net awards. You can find her poems in Poets Reading the News, Rattle, Radar, Barren Magazine, 3Elements Review, Typishly, Wraparound South, and elsewhere. She is the 1st Prize winner of the Comstock Review's 2019 Muriel Craft Bailey Memorial Award and the 3rd Prize winner in the 2019 Barren Press Poetry Contest.
