Screening of “To Kill a Mockingbird” and Panel Discussion to Benefit Young Writers Program

The Young Writers Program, a project of Santa Cruz Writes, will screen the classic film, To Kill a Mockingbird on Saturday, March 15. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served starting a 7:00 with the film to begin at 7:30 followed by a discussion panel. Panelists include local poet and winner of the 2013 Morton Marcus Memorial Poetry Prize Danusha Lameris, author and professor of literature at UCSC Micah Perks, and Assistant Professor of African-American and Asian-American literature Christopher S. Chen. Panelists will discuss the social and political implications of Harper Lee’s novel and the relevance, both current and past, of her work.

The Young Writers Program Movie Night Fundraiser will begin at 7:00 pm on March 15 in the first floor meeting room at the Museum of Art History, 705 Front Street, in Santa Cruz. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online or at the door the night of the event. Event sponsorship opportunities are also available.

The Young Writers Program brings trained community volunteers into classrooms to support student writing, build writing skills, and publish good work. The program serves students in grades 4-12 throughout Santa Cruz County.

Santa Cruz Writes (SCW) is a non-profit organization that seeks to develop and support a vibrant literary community dedicated to the craft of writing and its ability to inform, reveal, and enchant.
