Science Lecture: Genetically Modified Organisms in Food

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Advances in biotechnology are enabling us to manipulate the genetic material of plants and animals, including humans. Just because we have the capability, does it mean it should be done? What are the advantages, disadvantages, and far-ranging consequences of genetic manipulation? Dr. Barbara-Ann Lewis will discuss the philosophical, ethical, health and environmental issues regarding genetically modified organisms.

The talk will also include an interesting fact about soil to celebrate the current year as the International Year of Soils.

This illustrated lecture is intended to provide the general public with basic scientific information to help understand current controversies regarding each topic. No previous knowledge of science or math is necessary.

Dr. Barbara-Ann G. Lewis is Associate Professor Emeritus, Civil and Environmental Engineering, at Northwestern University, a former Environmental Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, and a faculty member of the University of the Commons in San Francisco.
