SciComm Studio 009: Melting Ice, Melting Barriers

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Climate change affects everyone, from businesses to scientists. How can we use climate data to influence business decisions in the future? How can scientists and science communicators help businesses and policymakers understand the complexity of climate change — and to suggest actionable solutions?
Meet the creator of the Arctic Basecamp at Davos, an innovative science communication event that calls for action from global leaders to address global risks from Arctic change, and a scientist whose research has contributed to conservation strategies. We will connect with speakers both physically and virtually for a truly international conversation concerning climate change and science advocacy.
Join us for a morning SciComm Studio — a follow up to last year's Changing Climates, Changing Minds event — taking place during the Global Climate Action Summit. Learn from climate science experts working at the intersection of science and policy.

Speakers
David Hik is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, Simon Fraser University. David’s research focuses on mountain, high latitude, and other 'cold' ecosystems, and understanding the ways that species interactions and environmental variability may influence community structure and population dynamics in these sometimes stressful environments. Through a variety of long-term and/or large-scale observations and experimental studies of ecological processes, this work has contributed to the development of strategies for conserving biodiversity, maintaining and restoring disturbed ecosystems, and understanding the consequences of climate change.
Gail Whiteman is Professor-in-Residence at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the Rubin Chair and Director of the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business at Lancaster University, UK. Her research analyzes how actors make sense of complex problems and build resilience across scales given environmental pressures and social inequities.  In collaboration with British Antarctic Survey, she is also the creator of the Arctic Basecamp at Davos (2017 and 2018), an innovative science communication and outreach event in that calls for action from global leaders to address global risks from Arctic change.
