San Francisco Design Week Opening Night Reception + Two-Day Program at The Design Hub

WHAT: SAN FRANCISCO DESIGN WEEK (SFDW) kicks off with a special OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION. SFDW celebrates and promotes the essential week-long city-wide festival that showcases the unique intersection of ideas, design, business & entrepreneurism that makes the Bay Area the birthplace of the future.

The opening night reception launches a week-long event celebrating the region’s graphic arts, fashion, product, user interface, interior design and architecture, and food industries. Experience a designer’s life through interactive exhibits and installations, and musical entertainment by Cali&Co.

5:30PM Champagne toast by AIGA Executive Director Dawn Zidonis, and announcement of the first SFDW Design Award winners at the Opening Awards Exhibition. Entries will be judged by a jury composed of leading Bay Area design professionals:

Leaders of the design community will join to remark upon SFDW, including SF Design Week Advisors: Vas Kiniris, founder of Zinc Details and executive. director of the San Francisco Council District of Merchant Associations; Designer Eche Martinez, founder of design firm Eche; Diane Dorrans Saeks, best-selling design author; editor, C Magazine; contributing editor, Hearst Design Group; and founder of The Style Saloniste blog.

OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION HIGHLIGHTS: Exhibits, and Installations:

Airbnb is creating a custom installation environment aligned with this years theme, a social responsibility initiative "Start Here".

Philanthropost-- A highly interactive exhibit that’s part sculpture and part design storytelling outpost imagined and created by Britelite Immersive. Product and architectural design can facilitate important conversations and Philanthropost seeks to create a meeting point where groups using design to impact the community of the Greater Bay Area for good can virtually demonstrate their initiatives. Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to explore the stories and fund the projects in order to make them happen.

HUB EVENTS (Panel Discussions, Presentations). Highlights:

Future Foods, an ecosystem lab of food innovation, food designers, and food technologies

Food Innovation is a Cooperative (Design) Effort and Global Food Trends
Design Thinking and Food Innovation expert, Matteo Vignoli, co-founder of the Future Food Institute, will take us through the human-centered innovation process in the food industry.

From Aviation to Autonomous Mobility: A thought-provoking discussion on the intersection of trust and autonomous mobility and how to apply a passenger-centric approach to self-driving cars.

Designing Wearables for Physical Culture: Poland-based sports equipment design expert Dorota Kabala talks about challenges in designing for sports, including a 3-D printed hand for horse riding and dance.

From Films to Your Living Room: How Anki Approached Character Development and Animation of a Physical Robot: Animated character specialists Dei Gaztelumendi and Mooly Segal from Anki discuss key learnings from their work around the company’s best-selling robot, Cozmo.
